Residency Summary

Takatoshi Ito spoke on the Chinese property bubble and what lessons can be learned from Japan's lost decade at a public lecture. During his stay he guest lectured in classes and met with students, and leaders and members of the San Diego Japanese community. He also had the opportunity to engage with Japan Society of San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico.

Biography

His teaching career has allowed him to work extensively in both the U.S. and Japan, with appointments at the University of Minnesota, Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and department of economics, and the Institute of Economic Research at Hitotsubashi University in Japan. He was a national fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and a visiting scholar at the Bank of Japan’s Institute of Monetary and Economic Studies. He was a senior adviser in the research department of the IMF. He was also a member of Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy under Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He was Japan’s deputy vice minister for international finance from 1999 to 2001, and has authored various publications, such as the “Financial Policy and Central Banking in Japan” (MIT Press, 2000) and “No More Bashing: Building a New Japan–United States Economic Relationship” (2001).
