Nirupama Rao is a former Indian foreign service officer. She retired as Foreign Secretary to the Government of India, the senior most position in the Foreign Service. Rao was only the second woman to occupy the post. She was also the first woman spokesperson of the Indian foreign office and she served as India's first female ambassador to Sri Lanka and to the People's Republic of China. She served as ambassador of India to the United States from 2011 to 2013. She has also taught at Brown University and Columbia University. 

Rao was a Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow and holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Pondicherry University in India. 

During her residency, she will share her perspectives on Indian foreign policy.
