Biography

Rebecca MacKinnon is founding Director of the Ranking Digital Rights program at New America, leading a team that works to promote freedom of expression and privacy on the internet. MacKinnon is co-founder of the citizen media network Global Voices. She also serves on the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists and is a founding member of the Global Network Initiative. MacKinnon was CNN’s Beijing and Tokyo Bureau Chief. She served on the faculty of the University of Hong Kong’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre and taught as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

MacKinnon received her AB in Government from Harvard University and was a Fulbright scholar in Taiwan. 

During her residency, she will share her perspective on the role of media in US-China relations.
