Is populism reshaping social protection in Latin America?

Pacific Leadership Fellows Tiago Falcão, who currently serves as the national secretary of Income of Citizenship of the Ministry of Social Development in Brasil, will offer insights on how the emergence of charismatic leaders, coupled with increases in social expenditures and the launch of conditional cash transfer programs (CCTs), have changed social protection in Latin America.

Biography

Tiago Falcão is national secretary of Income of Citizenship of the Ministry of Social Development in Brasil. He has been a specialist in Public Policy and Government Management since 1997. In 2012, he took over the Extraordinary Secretariat for Overcoming Extreme Poverty in the then Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger. His professional career includes other positions in the federal government, such as secretary of Management of the Ministry of Planning, Development and Management; special adviser in the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic and adviser in the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic.

Falcão holds a degree in Economics from the University of Brasília and a master’s in economic development with a concentration in social and labor economics from the State University of Campinas.

During his residency, Falcão will share insight on conditional cash transfers in anti-poverty programs.
