Challenges for Business Sustainability Practices in Emerging Markets

In today's business world, companies are facing significant challenges when it comes to sustainability. While they aim to achieve growth along with doing good, incorporating sustainability practices introduces additional objectives and costs to their operations. In this talk, Pacific Leadership Fellow Veerathai Santiprabhob discussed the sustainability challenges facing companies in emerging markets.

Biography

Veerathai Santiprabhob was the 20th governor of the Bank of Thailand (2015-2020). He is a macroeconomist and financial professional with 30 years of experience in economic policy design, commercial banking and capital markets. Currently, he serves as an independent director of leading corporations, academic institutions as well as non-profit organizations with emphasis on sustainability.

Santiprabhob had served on a number of boards that set economic and financial policy, including the Monetary Policy Committee, National Economic and Social Development Board, Securities and Exchange Commission and Insurance Commission. At the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he was a member of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC). He had also served as the chair of the Central Bank Governance Group and Asian Consultative Council of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), as well as the chair of the Southeast Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Board of Governors. At present, he serves on the Oversight Committee of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

He earned a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. He was awarded the Anandamahidol Foundation Scholarship, Eisenhower Fellowship and S.R. Nathan Fellowship.
